TL;DR

Designed and delivered a scalable navigation feature for commercial drivers which launched fast, adopted widely, and aligned to VP-level safety goals.

Amazon Relay is a logistics platform that supports the drivers and carriers moving freight across Amazon’s middle mile network. It provides tools for trip planning, navigation, and load management, with a focus on safety, efficiency, and compliance.

Designed and launched a commercial navigation feature that improved driver safety by avoiding low bridges and illegal routes. This was a VP-level priority aimed at reducing on-road incidents across North America and Europe. The work replaced drivers’ reliance on tools like Google Maps, which didn’t support commercial routing, and laid the foundation for long-term investment in fleet safety and feature expansion.

My role

  • Led UX strategy and execution for commercial navigation.
  • Defined product requirements and aligned cross-functionally with product, design, and engineering.
  • Conducted in-field user testing with drivers checking in/out of facilities.
  • Collaborated with engineering to understand mapping limitations and deliver on VP timeline.
  • Worked with legal to ensure routing aligned with federal/state transport laws.

Challenges

  • Tight delivery timeline, even as designs evolved.
  • Minimal product team involvement, as they were allocated to other high-priority initiatives during the project.
  • 3rd-party mapping vendor imposed technical limitations throughout the project.

Outcome

  • Set the foundation to expand future navigation feature offerings.
  • Increased driver safety by reducing low-bridge incidents.
  • Achieved ~80% adoption within the first week of launch.
  • Met the VP’s timeline and strategic safety objective.
