Elevating Truck Driver Safety with UX Design

Amazon, Middle Mile Tech
March–May 2018

Commercial Navigation in Relay for Driver provided drivers with legal commercial routes. Historically, drivers commonly used Google Maps, which doesn’t offer commercial routing. A 2018 VP-level goal was to improve safety and reduce the number of on-road and low-bridge accidents throughout the NA and EU network. Product had defined that this would be one of the ways to meet the VP goal.

My role

  • Lead UX designer responsible for the overall experience of the feature.
  • Created product requirements and got alignment across product, design, and development for version one of the features.
  • Conducted onsite user testing with drivers as they checked in and out of a facility.
  • Collaborated with development to understand tech limitations and meet the VP timeline.
  • Worked with the legal team to ensure the on-road designs abided by state and federal laws.

Challenges

  • The timeline was tight on this while at the same time supporting already in development work.
  • Limited to no support from the product.
  • Used a 3rd party mapping vendor with many
limitations were discovered during the design or development phase.

Outcome

  • Set the foundational work to expand the feature offerings in the future.
  • It has increased safety, mainly by reducing the number of low-bridge incidents.
  • In the first week, about 80% of trips drivers took used this feature.
  • Were able to launch in time to meet the VP goal’s tight timeline.
